Led by contributions totaling nearly $100,000 from Dean Angela Onwuachi-Willig and the School of Law’s Dean’s Advisory Board, we are proud to announce the establishment of the Clarence Jones (’59) Scholarship Fund. Dr. Clarence B. Jones (’59), veteran, civil rights legend, attorney, and former advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (STH ’55), played a pivotal role in shaping our nation through his leadership and work in the Civil Rights Movement. He served as an organizer and strategic partner for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the largest Civil Rights protest in the history of the United States, and he helped draft the famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Dr. Jones also played a pivotal role in helping Dr. King write and distribute the “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” In May 2024, President Biden awarded him with the highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, making him the second member of the BU Law Class of 1959 to receive the honor (Congresswoman Barbara Jordan was the first).
BU Law is incredibly proud of how his lifelong dedication to justice and equality continues to inspire generations, and we are thrilled to establish this scholarship in his name. We invite alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and friends to join us in honoring Dr. Jones and ensuring that the next generation of lawyers committed to furthering racial justice and unity have the opportunity to attend the School of Law.
